My giant orange tree

Less than five meters away from my studio window there stands an orange tree, at most one meter high. The oranges from it are very sweet but it is not easy for me to call it a “tree”. In fact, it is hard. You see, I was born in Africa, in Mozambique, where every tree insists in being much bigger than that.

Este é muito provavelmente o mais pacífico dos meus quadros. Pode sentir-se a passagem do tempo, a tranquilidade da terra e a frescura da sombra e folhagem da árvore. Se a música o inspira e comove, como a mim, quase conseguirá ouvir o lento cantar dos pássaros à distância. Lendo estas linhas já deve suspeitar que esta não é uma pintura sobre um lugar. É uma pintura sobre um estado de espírito.

This is quite probably the most peaceful painting I have ever painted. One can feel the slow passing of time, the tranquillity of the land and the freshness of the tree canopy and shadow. If you are inspired and moved by music, as I am, you will almost hear the slow singing of the birds in the distance. Reading these lines you probably already know this is not a painting about a place. It is a painting about a state of mind.

This is one of a series of just five paintings inspired by the music of C. Saint-Saens, "Carnival of the animals" (also known as the "Zoological Fantasy). C. Saint-Saens lived from 1835 to 1921. While my paintings are usually not about music, I always get inspiration from the great classics and usually paint to the sound of one or the other master piece. These five paintings represent a celebration of life, music and joy!
