Durante umas horas num final da manhã fiquei a ver o mar, maravilhado com as idas e vindas das ondas colidindo umas com as outras e com as rochas lá em baixo. Vi chuveiros de pequenas gotas de água fluindo no ar e cintilando sob a luz do sol. Nessa tarde pintei esse oceano e essas ondas. Mas alguma coisa não estava bem. Não consegui assinar o quadro e dá-lo como terminado. Nas duas ou três semanas seguintes fiquei a olhar para o quadro tentando descobrir o que não estava bem. Então, uma tarde, vi, entre duas ondas e brilhando sob o sol, um pequeno barco a remos, sem qualquer remo, onde estava um homem muito velho com uma longa barba. Longe de tudo. Longe de todos. O mais extremo dos eremitas.

For a couple of hours, one late morning, I looked at the sea, marvelling about the coming and going of the waves clashing against each other and the rocks down there. I saw showers of small droplets of water flowing into the air playing with sunlight. That afternoon I painted that ocean and those waves. But something was not quite all right. I could not get myself to sign the painting and put it to rest. For the next three weeks or so I stared at the painting trying to figure out what was wrong. Then one afternoon I saw it, just between two wave crests, shining under the sun. In a very small rowboat without any oar there was a long bearded very old man. Away from everything. Away from everybody. The most extreme of the hermits.

Thinking about the force of the sea I was painting the movement and clashing of the waves into one another. Then, a sail boat appeared in the horizon, a red sail bobbling about with the waves and the wind. Suddenly the mast broke. I must also say that everyone aboard managed to escape without any harm. This painting is referenced with a very large photograph (25 cm x 18 cm) on page 36 of Inspiration: International Art Book 2017, and again on page 129 of the 2018 edition.
