Aristides Meneses afirmou uma vez que se pudesse salvar apenas um quadro de toda a história da arte salvaria “Cristo carregando a Cuz” de Bosch.
Nesta sua interpretação, a face de Cristo é idêntica à do quadro de Bosch, mas todos os outros personagens e a temática geral são totalmente diferentes, retirando-lhe objectivamente todo o significado religioso. No imaginário cristão, este significado mantém-se e é reforçado, mais uma vez de forma ambígua, pelo título escolhido.
Aristides Meneses said, once, that if he could only save one painting from the whole history of art, he would save Bosch “Christ carrying the cross”.
In this interpretation, the leading face is the same from Bosch but all the others and the overall subject are totally different, objectively stripped of all the religious content. However, for Christians the meaning is kept and even reinforced, by the title, in an ambiguous way. |

Duas mulheres descalças, ocupando quase todo o espaço estão, de lanterna na mão, à procura de algo. Ambas são de idade avançada, com rostos e posturas marcados pelo sofrimento. Apenas o título nos informa do objecto da sua procura. As lanternas são as que Aristides Meneses costuma colocar nas mãos de Diogenes.
Two women, barefoot, occupying almost the whole space, are with lamps in their hands, looking for something. Only the title of the painting informs us about the subject of their search. The lamps are the ones usually carried by Diogenes. |

O Covil

Depois de ler “O Covil” de Franz Kafka, Aristides Meneses fez diversas tentativas mal sucedidas e incompletas para pintar este quadro, algumas com aspecto bem diverso e foram destruídos.
A cena é facilmente identificável como aquela em que o personagem de Kafka sai do seu covil e se esconde cá fora a olhar para a sua própria entrada, para verificar se esta passa despercebida aos outros.
After reading “The Burrow “ by Franz Kafka, Aristides Meneses attempted a few times to do this painting, but without successs. Some had a very different result and were abandoned.
The scene is easy to identify as the one when Kafka personage comes out of its burrow, hiding and looking at its own entrance, to see if it is not noticed by others. |

Este trabalho junta, como malfeitores, um conjunto de personagens principais e secundários de diversos quadros anteriores, alguns recuando mais de duas décadas. A pintura das árvores da floresta segue as linhas das experiências com tinta da china pintada e soprada sobre papel.
This work joins, as malefactors, a fair number of personages from previous paintings some of them dating back more than twenty years. The format of the forest trees follows Aristides Meneses experiences with Indian ink painted and blown on paper. |

Aristides Meneses regressa à folha em decomposição, que aqui assume o papel central. O tema do quadro aparece relegado para uma posição e dimensão marginais, no canto inferior direito.
Ao desaparecer, o anjo desintegra-se, naturalmente, em anti-fotões. Ao aparecer o anjo materializa-se num feixe de luz, como em “Materialização de um anjo da guarda”, do mesmo ano.
Aristides Meneses returns to his decomposing leaf, here in monumental size and aspiring the leading role. The subject of the painting, judging by its title, is relegated to a corner, with small relative dimensions.
While going away the angel disintegrates in anti photons. While appearing it materializes in an explosion of light as in “Materialization of a guardin angel”, the same year. |
