O tema está tratado da forma ambígua habitual na obra de Aristides Meneses. Mas neste caso trata-se obviamente de um náufrago, alguém a quem algo de mau aconteceu, mas também de um sobrevivente. Mais significativa é a forma da onda, claramente a rebentar na praia, indicando que o náufrago está quase a salvo.
The subject is painted with the register of ambiguity that characterizes Aristides Meneses work. But in this case it is, obviously, someone to whom something horrible has happened, but who is also a survivor. More significant is the form of the wave, clearly reaching shore on a beach, indicating the man is almost safe. |

Trata-se de um dos quadros mais alegóricos de Aristides Meneses, cuja chave se encontra no título. Duas fortes emoções conflituosas lutam para ganhar domínio. Diogenes está expectante. Como na vida real, se o conflito não for resolvido virá a demência. Trata-se da ideia de emoções conflituosas simultâneas a que o pintor muitas vezes se refere como sendo a essência da condição humana. A paisagem da cena é semelhante à do quadro “Não veio ninguém”, de 2003.
This is one of the most allegoric paintings, whose key is in the title. Two strong conflicting emotions fight for the supremacy of the mind. Diogenes is expecting for the resolution of it. As in real life, if the conflict can not be resolved soon, the mind will become dement. This is the idea of conflicting simultaneous emotions that the painter refers to as being the essence of the human condition. The landscape is similar to the one in “Nobody came” (2003). |

Este foi o único quadro com que alguma vez Aristides Meneses realmente sonhou. O título surgiu no momento em que foi exposto pela primeira vez quando o pintor reparou que a metade esquerda contém uma paisagem pacífica e a metade direita uma cena violenta, mas ambas estão em aparente equilíbrio.
This was the only painted image from a dream. The title appeared while the painting was about to be exhibited for the first time, when the painter noticed that the left half contains a very peaceful scene and the right half a very violent one, both in equilibrium. |
