Esta foi a primeira experiência de Aristides Meneses com a técnica de pintura a óleo sobre tela, pintada enquanto frequentava o terceiro ano da licenciatura em Engenharia de Electrónica e Telecomunicações.
As figuras esguias, à esquerda, são a reprodução de esculturas em madeira, executadas por si no ano anterior, inspiradas nas esculturas etruscas que vira nas suas viagens.
A cruz, ainda a sangrar, parece indicar que, apesar do título, o mundo não está realmente morto.
Aristides Meneses first attempt with oil on canvas technique was painted in his room while attending the third year of his Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering dregree.
The slender figures at the left are a reproduction of sculptures in wood, made by himself the previous year and inspired by the Etruscan sculptures he saw on his trips.
The cross, still bleeding, seems to imply that, besides the title of the painting, the world is not really dead. |

O segundo trabalho a óleo sobre tela, poucos dias após a primeira experiência, apresenta motivos agressivos, cores fortes e um ambiente que parece situar-nos num espaço algures entre a vida e a morte.
The second work with oil on canvas, a few days after the first experience, shows violent lines, strong colours and an environment that seems to lead us to a place between life and death. |

No ambiente dúbio entre a vida e a morte, surge algo positivo mas aparentemente inacessível. Aristides Meneses colocou a sua ilha no ramo de uma enorme árvore, ela própria com grandes sinais de degradação, como mostra o forte tronco reduzido a uma casca muito carcomida.
À semelhança dos dois anteriores, também este quadro mostra fluídos em movimento. Parece representar sangue ou seiva, mas o pintor sempre recusou a existência de símbolos nos seus quadros, afirmando inúmeras vezes que pinta os objectos despojados do seu eventual significado simbólico.
In the dubious environment between life and death, something positive but apparently inaccessible appears. Aristides Meneses placed his island on a branch of a huge tree, itself with clear signs of decline, with the strong trunk reduced to an eaten shell.
As in the two previous paintings, this one also shows moving fluids. They seem to represent blood or sap, but the painter always refused the existence of symbols in his paintings, claiming to paint objects without their eventual symbolic meaning. |
